The live performance — Rihanna’s first in more than five years — attracted 121.017 million viewers during the Feb.12-dated broadcast, The original ratings had put her halftime show at 118.7 million viewers. With the jump of nearly 3 million, Rihanna’s show surpassed Katy Perry’s 2015 performance, which previously held the record with 121 million viewers.

Shop the best of Rihanna’s discography on vinyl and more, Nielsen’s revised report regarding Super Bowl LVII between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles also makes this year’s big game the most-watched Super Bowl in history. According to reports in the Associated Press, Nielsen revised this year’s original game ratings figure of 113.1 million by 2 million “after a review that revealed encoding irregularities as well as issues with out-of-home measurement.” “There were two separate issues, each of them accounting for an additional one million viewers,” Mike Mulvihill, Fox Sports executive vice president and head of strategy and analytics, explained in an interview with Variety,

  • The new 115.1 million figure breaks the record that was previously set by the 2015 Super Bowl between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, which had 114.442 million viewers – not including streaming.
  • During the singer’s now history-making performance at Glendale, Arizona’s State Farm Stadium, she performed her Billboard Hot 100 No.1 hits including “Only Girl (in the World),” “We Found Love,” “Rude Boy,” and “Work.” Ahead of her performance, Rihanna’s Savage x Fenty lingerie and clothing brand sold “Rihanna concert interrupted by a football game, weird but whatever” T-shirts as part of its exclusive game day collection.

Away from the Super Bowl, Rihanna has collected a string of major accolades in recent months. “We Found Love” was certified Diamond by the RIAA, moving her up to third on the list of artists with the most certified units in digital singles. She now stands behind Drake (184) and Eminem (166).

Was the halftime show good 2023?

REVIEW: 2023 Super Bowl halftime show doesn’t quite ‘shine bright like a diamond’ Households across the U.S. tuned in to watch the Kansas City Chiefs square off against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl on Sunday Feb.12. Did I watch any of it? Nope.

  1. However, I did start paying attention when the halftime show began and Rihanna replaced the football players on the field.
  2. I found the halftime show a bit lackluster, but still enjoyable.
  3. Rihanna’s singing and the set list was what made the show for me.
  4. The performance included songs I easily recognized to ones I didn’t — though this may be because I realized I don’t listen to nearly as much Rihanna as I thought I did.

The set list included songs like “Work,” “Run This Town” and “Diamonds.” My favorite had to be when she began singing “Umbrella,” and I had flashbacks to Tom Holland performing the tune on the show I have to say, he might have outperformed her, or, at the very least, had a much better outfit.

  • The outfits that Rihanna’s backup dancers donned during the halftime show were a letdown and have been gloriously made fun of all over,
  • My friend’s comment about the outfits summarizes what made them so hilariously bad: they all looked like giant marshmallows.
  • This would have been an odd outfit choice for a halftime show generally, but especially in Arizona: those poor dancers were probably sweating so much.

However, what they lacked in visual appeal, they made up for in dance moves. Rihanna herself didn’t do much in terms of dancing; her dancers were moving all around with impressive choreography. But the dancing, along with the outfits, have not escaped the trap of being made fun of on,

  • I have seen a range of jokes focusing on their ski jacket-esque outfits all over my TikTok “For You Page.” Rihanna’s all-red number, though, was brilliant and the most fashionable outfit featured during the halftime show.
  • Although, I did expect an outfit change that ultimately never came.
  • Lack of outfit changes aside, there was still lots of spectacle during the performance, including several floating platforms that held the dancers and Rihanna far over the crowd.

The platforms were something that made the halftime show worth watching, mostly because I was trying to figure out where in the ceiling of the stadium they were attached. To finish off the performance, Rihanna rose above her dancers alone on one of the platforms: it was a terrifying act as the platform was quite high up and could be seen swaying in the wind.

The singer seemed unfazed, though, as she belted out lines of songs and brought the show to a nice, confident conclusion. Overall, it was a nice halftime show: not my favorite (Jennifer Lopez and Shakira’s halftime show holds that spot in my heart) but still good, even if some of the costuming choices were a little goofy.

Still, it was a good enough performance that even got me to watch a bit of the Super Bowl after the show was over. Elizabeth Secor is the multimedia editor for the Daily Lobo. English – The Super Bowl is noted for its enduring ratings. While viewership for prime time series and other sports such as baseball has declined over time, viewership of the Super Bowl has remained stable. In fact, the Super Bowl is the American sports broadcast with the most consistent ratings, and draws substantially higher ratings than other sports events, including the NBA Finals and World Series.

  1. Ratings for the Super Bowl first peaked from 1977 to 1987, when no less than 44.4% of American households with television sets would watch.
  2. From the late 2000s to mid-2010s, ratings peaked again—viewership grew for all but one broadcast from 2006 to 2015.
  3. This was attributed to the NFL’s broadened appeal to female and Hispanic audiences, as well as the league’s ability to prop up “high-profile” players in the media; female viewership grew every year from 2003 to 2008.

However, the 2019 game became the least-watched in more than a decade and the household rating for the Super Bowl declined for the fourth consecutive year. The 1982 game remains the highest-rated Super Bowl broadcast; it earned a 49.1 household rating.

Does Europe watch the Super Bowl?

Super Bowl Party: Is the U.K. and E.U. ready for more American Football? The kickoff for Super Bowl is this coming weekend and, at least according to the sky-high TV ratings of recent playoff games in the United States, American viewers are planning to watch the game in huge numbers.

Last year in the U.K., the big game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs drew more than 4 million viewers and listeners in the U.K. according to the NFL – and was the most viewed Super Bowl in the U.K. in 30 years. It will be interesting to see the viewership levels in the U.K. this time around, without star quarterback Tom Brady playing and with competition from the Winter Olympics.

But what is the long-term status of America’s #1 sport in the U.K. and Europe? The answer is mixed, but points to solid growth potential for the league and its media partners moving forward. Altman Solon first asked sports fans in Europe for their views on the NFL (along with Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association) in 2020 as part of our annual Global Sports Survey.

The initial survey found low interest levels for the NFL in a region dominated by European football and the top leagues in each country. However, those interest levels, at least in the U.K. and Germany, bumped up in the most recent survey, to 16 percent, placing them ahead of other U.S. leagues and on par with non-domestic European premier football leagues in terms of popularity.

Sources: Altman Solon 2021 Global Sports Survey, Altman Solon Research & Analysis The American version of football will never supplant the European football in the U.K. or the continent, but Altman Solon’s survey also shows that the growth in the domestic media rights value for European premier leagues has been stagnant in recent years – in certain cases actually losing value.

Sources: GlobalData, SportsPro, Altman Solon Research and Analysis While the top European leagues are still very valuable and popular in their home countries, it makes sense for the leagues to focus on international growth, especially in regions like the U.S. and Latin American, in which, per Altman Solon’s survey, they already enjoy solid interest levels.

On the flip slide, media companies could look to the NFL and other U.S. based leagues to diversify their sports portfolios and tap into a growing interest in American sports across the region. Altman Solon, the world’s largest strategy consulting firm exclusively focused on Telecommunications, Media, and Technology, conducted the 2021 Global Sports Survey in August-September with more than 18,000 respondents across 16 countries.
